Create your own low-lying fog effect

Build Your Own Affordable Low Lying Fogger

This Halloween we decided to create a graveyard scene for our Halloween party, complete with tombstones and low lying fog. It's surprisingly simple to do and takes only an hour or less after a trip to your local hardware store.

Items needed:

Turn your existing fog machine into a low-lying fog machine.

  • Existing 1,000 watt fog machine

  • Existing fog machine timer (controls for duration and interval)

  • One 18 gallon plastic storage bin with lockable top (black or blue)

  • One 4 foot section of polyethylene spa flex hose (or 6 foot PVC washing machine drain hose)

  • Three 4 inch PVC reducing couplers

  • One 4 inch by 6 foot flexible rigid dryer duct

  • One roll of black duct tape

  • Two or three bags of ice

Instructions:

Step One - Cut flex hose into (one) one foot section and (one) three foot section. Set aside.

Step Two - Cut one hole in each side of the plastic storage bin, approx. three inches from the bottom and slightly smaller than the flex hose.

Step Three - Feed (twist) the ends of each of the flex hose sections into the cut holes. Allow for approx. three inches extension into the storage bin.

Step Four - Attach one PVC reducing coupler to each end of flex hose and insert four inch dryer duct into ends of each PVC reducing coupler. Secure with black duct tape.

Step Five - Attach one PVC reducing coupler to three foot end of flex hose (this is the end that will set against Fog machine). Secure with black duct tape.

Step Six - Place two or three bags of ice into storage bin. Allow 20-30 mins to chill.

Set your Fog Machine timer duration and interval to the desired effect (experiment to find your best scenario). See our results below...

  1. We tested our low lying fogger with both Froggy's Fog Designer Select Backwood Bay and QuikBlast fluids. The QuikBlast fog fluid was great but disappeared a little too quickly for our outdoor design so we went with BackwoodBay for its long hang time and haze effect, giving our graveyard a perfect ambiance. Visit http://www.froggysfog.com for more information and to order fluids.
